President Skorton,

I am pleased to share with you Employee Assembly Resolution 1 -- Adopting Mission and Vision Statements for the Employee Assembly. The EA earlier this year held an all-day retreat facilitated by our colleagues in organizational effectiveness. From this retreat, the EA came away stronger, more focused and with a desire to further solidify our purpose in shared governance at Cornell. Resolution 1 is what we felt was the first step needed as we continue to develop the EA and work at better serving the staff community. The mission and vision are statements that together frame the strategic action plan and future for the EA. In the present, the mission statement identifies the actions and motivations for the EA; the vision statement is a framework for the future.

Reference is made to a “position and branding proposal,” in R1 -- I have included that document in this email. It is not a formal policy or a change to the standing rules or charter but a guide for how we develop our communications. This is an evolving document that in the future could very well be incorporated into our formal operations; but at this time, it serves as internal guidance for our executive board and communications committee. The executive board has been tasked with implementing and evaluating the success of these statements in the first year. I am confident that through careful consideration and with a shared vision members of the EA will be better able to serve our constituents by further advancing the thoughts, concerns and interests of the staff.

As a side note, the EA will also be undertaking a charter review in the coming months as we continue to refine our operations. We would welcome any feedback you might have.

Best,
Greg
