Dear David,

Thank you for sending me a copy of GPSA Resolution 2: Condemning the Proposed DHS Ruling Requiring a Fixed Period of Stay for International Students.

I am proud of the comment letter submitted by Cornell voicing strong opposition to the proposed rule change. I sincerely hope that the Department takes our comments to heart – along with the hundreds of thousands of others that were written in opposition – and withdraws the proposal before it becomes effective. Regardless, Cornell will continue to be a forceful advocate for the interests of our international community.

I appreciate many of the points articulated so clearly in Resolution 2. I know that international students have faced increased challenges in recent years, which is reflected in the corresponding increase in workload for the staff who assist them. Cornell is committed to strengthening our support for international students and, to this end, has made changes in the Office of Global Learning (OGL) to streamline services and provide more effective assistance to students. To help guide those efforts, OGL is conducting surveys to evaluate where they should direct additional support. I encourage GPSA to remain in contact with Vice Provost Wolford in the coming months to share feedback and progress.

Additionally, OVPIA appointed an Associate Vice Provost for International Affairs – Gustavo Flores-Macias - who has focused on international student inclusion over the past year. He, along with OGL and its partners, has led an effort to organize programming and other support for the international student community, making excellent connections to CAPS, Student and Campus Life, and other units on campus for the benefit of international students.

International students have been integral to the fabric of Cornell since its earliest days. We will remain responsive to their needs in this especially difficult year.

Sincerely,

Martha Pollack
