As you know, Joe conveyed to me Student Assembly Resolution 51: Requesting the Establishment of the Policy 6.4 (Prohibited Bias, Discrimination, Harassment, and Sexual and Related Misconduct) Cornell Title IX Oversight and Advisory Board. While I appreciate the SA’s desire, as expressed in the resolution, to share in the responsibility of creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning, living, and working environment, I am unable to accept this resolution.
The issues that come to the Title IX office are complex, highly confidential, and subject to a number of federal and state regulations that govern their activities. As a result, the establishment of an external oversight board is not feasible.
I note that a number of paths are currently available to students who wish to be more involved in the work of Title IX. For example, students participate in the Sexual Violence Prevention Coalition; in consultation with the Title IX Office, a student group is producing a Title IX resources video for use in the student organization leader training; and the Office periodically meets with students and student groups who wish to share their feedback. I’ve shared your resolution with Associate Vice President Laura Rugless, and encourage the SA to reach out to her to discuss other potential paths to fruitful student involvement in Title IX.
