Notes

Thank you for conveying to me University Assembly Resolution 9: Revisions to the University Assembly Charter.

I must reject the change to Sub-Section 3.1.1 removing the examples of “meaningful opportunity for community participation in the development of such recommendations and resolutions.” This language offers community members and Assembly members guidance on the kind of opportunity for engagement the Charter stipulates as one of the Assembly’s responsibilities.

I also must reject the change in Sub-Section 3.1.2 for the response period from recipients of resolutions from a calendar month to seven days. While timely response to the UA and other assemblies by university officials is important, given officials’ other duties as well as the complexities involved in some resolutions, seven days is not sufficient time for officials to consider resolutions and develop responses.

Finally, I note that Line 68 of the resolution contains an outdated provision regarding the timeline for UA review of changes to the Campus Code of Conduct. The Student Code of Conduct adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2021 sets forth the process for public comment on proposed changes to the Code that preempt the outdated provisions in the UA Charter. I encourage you to eliminate any confusion on this topic by removing that line from the UA charter.

Sincerely,

Martha E. Pollack
